Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, covering an
area of over 777 sq km, is one of the finest
wildlife sanctuaries in India. With its
unspoiled landscapes and rich variety of
wildlife, this Kerala wildlife reserve is
located in Thekkady of Idukki district.
The lush tropical forests offer amazing
opportunities jungle safaris, trekking and
bird watching. The scenic Periyar Lake located
in the heart of the sanctuary lends more
colors to the wilderness of the region.
This Kerala wildlife sanctuary was declared

Barking Deer, Panthers, Indian Bison, Sloth
Bears, Wild Boars, Stripe-necked Mongoose,
Nilgiri Langurs, Sambhars, Nilgiri Tahr,
Malabar Giant Squirrels, Dholes, Lion-Tailed
Macaques and many other species of animals.
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
also offers a rich variety of avifauna such
as Blue-winged Parakeet, Black-winged Kite,
Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Barbets, Great Indian
Hornbill, Cormorants, Plovers, Laughing
Thrushes, etc. This Kerala wildlife sanctuary
has over 250 species of birds. It comprises
of evergreen and moist deciduous forests.
The wildlife sanctuary offers opportunities
to go for trekking, boat cruising, bird
watching and jungle safaris.

143 km away in Madurai (Tamil Nadu). Cochin
Airport (Kerala) is 200 km from the sanctuary.
