Wildlife Sanctuary in Idukki Kerala, is
located between the Periyar and Cheruthoni
river, Idukki is a popular hill station
in the south Indian state of Kerala and
is also home to a wildlife sanctuary. The

of flora and fauna attracting wildlife enthusiasts

Flora - The entire landscape
of the Idukki wildlife sanctuary including
the nearby Idukki Arch Dam are covered by
charming covering of tropical evergreen
and deciduous forest, which offer habitat
and food for a large variety of bird and
animal species. Eucalyptus and pine trees
constitute a major portion of the forest.
Besides forests, there are stretches of
grasslands that serve as grazing ground
for animals.
Fauna - Among the mammals
one can spot a large number of elephants,
bisons, sambhars, deers, wild dogs, jungle
cats, tigers, leopards, barking deers, Nilgari
langurs, jackals, civets, wild boars and
bears. Besides, one can also find a large
number of reptiles including cobra, viper,
krait and a large number of non- poisonous
snakes.
Avi-fauna - There are around
200 bird species to be found at the Idukki
Wildlife Sanctuary including several migrants.
A large number of bird species such as Jungle
Fowl, Myna, Laughing Thrush, Black Bulbul,
Peafowl, Woodpecker, Kingfisher etc are
permanent inhabitants of this place. These
colourful birds ornament the lush green
forest of Idukki.
